Five Qualities of a Healthy Church
Acts 2:38-47
The Apostle Peter, while preaching in Jerusalem, declared to his audience that, “this Jesus, God raised Him up again, putting an end to the agony of death, since it was impossible for Him to be held in its power...therefore let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both Lord and Christ – this Jesus whom you crucified.” Being convicted of their sin and guilt, the audience asked the Apostle “what shall we do?” And Peter commanded them to repent and be saved.
His crucial message to this highly religious audience was clear. Mere religion saves no-one, but a repentant sinner, who places his faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ alone, he will be saved. And with this, Luke records for us that some three thousand souls were saved that day!
What is amazing about this record of the birth of the church at Jerusalem is this: Luke gives us some very important descriptions of this church's worship and ministry in verses 41-47. As we examine the activities of these early believers we will learn a great deal about the true nature of worship and ministry within a local church.
